Significant changes of the Lake Niedus island

The Lake Niedus island is known many years as a breeding site for a large colony of the Black-headed gulls and Common terns. It’s difficult to reach this island and it is not used for recreation, therefore this site was densely occupied by birds. However due to the fertilization of soil with birds’ excrements, it overgrew with nitrophilous vegetation, including various invasive plant species. Last year the colony was concentrating in the central part of the island, however the area became to small for the colony. The LOD implemented practical conservation actions on the island and it gave good results: the area, suitable for breeding, was significantly increased and the plant composition has changed as nettles and reed stand were replaced with sedges. Similar actions were implemented on the small island next to the the main island, including removal of shrubs. Is is expected, that these changes will be possitivelly accepted by birds and the island will be occupied by lange colony  birds.
