Project partners discussed practical conservation actions in Nemunas lower reaches

On May 16, 2019, members of the LOD together with the staff from the State Enterprise Inland Waterways Authority (VVKD) and Nemunas delta regional park administration, organised a joint boat trip in Nemunas river. A distance from Rusnė to Galzdonai was checked and the most suitable places for formation of new islands for terns in Nemunas river were discussed. Participants discussed various scenarious – not only new islands will be poured, but as well as new soil layer on allready existing islands will be added during the deepening process of Nemunas river. Numerous Common and Little terns were counted during this trip, it showed how important this segment of the river for the terns is. Numerous other birds were registeted on the small islands of Nemunas river: Dunlins, Temminck's stints, Common sandpipers, Northern lapwings, Eurasian oystercatchers, Common shelducks, Common mergansers, Gadwalls and many others. Participants also observed birds of prey – White-tailed eagles, Lesser spotted eagles, Red kites, Common buzzards and Western Marsh Harriers. This practical trip was important for planning practical conservation measures in Nemunas river, as well as organising terns’ monitoring activities.
