Reed beds are formed on islands of lake Kretuonas

The Lithuanian Ornithological Society has been implementing  the EU LIFE  Project Adjustment of key stakeholders’ capacity for improvement of Common and Little terns conservation status in Lithuania, No. LIFE17 NAT/LT/000545. The main objective of the Project is to improve   breeding population condition of Common and Little terns in sites designated for their protection through adequate maintenance of their habitats and application of other important measures for the species. For this purpose, in January and February this year maintenance work is carried out on the big island and small islands next to it in lake Kretuonas (LTSVEB003).

Part of the reeds are removed using shrub-cutters forming breeding sites both for rare terns and waders.
