New islands for terns in Nemunas river

One of the associated project partners is the State Enterprise Inland Waterways Authority, which following the Decree of the Lithuanian Government is responsible for supervision of the inland waterways of national importance and seeks to secure safe navigation conditions. The organisation implements the following activities: digging the riverbed of the waterways with the aim to ensure necessary characteristics of the waterways, formation and repair of the dikes (special hydro technical structures for regulation of the riverbed), constant supervision of the waterways, and implementation of other hydrographical works.

In cooperation with Lithuanian ornithological society, the State Enterprise Inland Waterways Authority, in the selected riverbed sections forms sandy open islands, which are more stabile during the floods. It will create safe habitats not only for terns, but as for other species: Common Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Northern Lapwing, Common Redshank, Black-headed gulls and others.
