Changing situation at Lipliūnai

Changing situation at Lipliūnai

In two years droughts exhausted nature – water abated in rivers and lakes, bogs and swamps. Deep snow that came later in winter gave a hope that in early spring soil will be watered. Changes were also expected in the Nemunas river at Lipliūnai where the colony of Common and Little terns had to be saved cleaning the riverbed due to shallow waters. Currently, the water level in the Nemunas river has risen and the river streams its waters widely separating the island and the riverside.  Instantly, the change was taken advantage of by birds coming from their wintering places. About 200 of Mallards flock, Tufted Ducks, Garganeys, Common Pochards, Common Mergansers, Mute Swans cluster here. Several Great Cormorants stick out among ducks, a pair of Whooper Swans swim around. Resting birds are bothered by two White-tailed Eagles. We hope the Nemunas river will not become drastically shallow again and terns that will return soon will find safe conditions to breed on a safe island.
