For Little and Common terns - an island in Nemunas river near Vilkija

A few years ago, in Nemunas river a sandy island near Vilkija has formed, which was immediately occupied by birds. This year a new small island next to the big one started to form. After the discussion with the project partner – the State Enterprise Inland Waterways Authority (VVKD), a decision was taken to expand and to form significantly larger island for birds for this year’s breeding season. The practical works, as its foreseen in the project application, will be implemented by the VVKD.
The practical works started in mid-May, the associated partner use special equipment (tube) to pour additional soil on the island from the distance, thus not disturbing breeding birds on the neighbouring island. Very likely terns will breed on the newly established island, as the breeding season just started.
