At the SPA, established for protection of terns, the riverbed section of Nemunas river between Prienai and Lengveniškes settlement, the practical conservation actions – restoration of the degraded breeding habitats of terns, started implementation in September. These actions are implemented in the framework of the LIFE TERNS project.
It is foreseen to remove woody vegetation from 3,7 ha islands in Nemunas river. These islands are not suitable for terns’ breeding anymore and population of birds, which was the biggest in Nemunas Loops Regional Park, disappeared during the last decade. It is expected, that birds will return to the islands, when the breeding habitats will be restored. The end for practical actions is scheduled for November, 2019.
