25-11-2019
The Associated Partner Nemunas Loops Regional Park administration was responsible for restoration of the breeding habitats on the Nemunas river island near Pelėšiškės settlement. This area was established as Natura 2000 site for protection of Little terns, however due to the overgrow of island with high vegetation, it became not suitable for breeding as Little terns prefer open sandy islands as breeding habitats.
The island was covered with geotextile and mixture of gravel and sand. It is expected, that this management strategy will last longer, than the annual remove of vegetation, which require constant human resources as Nemunas river islands overgrow this vegetation is very fast.
At the beginning of November all the planned actions were completed by the experienced service provider and the site is ready for the next breeding season. It is expected that these measures will recover the population of Little tern in the Regional Park.
