The waterfowl colony site and a wide area around it was managed applying exhausting mowing. Efforts were contributed to make the islands open to the extent possible and to form low vegetation. In order to ensure successful breeding of Common terns swampy reeds where cranes used to breed were cut. The aim was to preserve the most important colony of Common terns in southern Lithuania rearranging the habitats preferred by cranes so they would stop nesting here. The aim was to preserve the most important colony of Common terns in southern Lithuania rearranging the habitats preferred by cranes so they would stop nesting here. This measure was taken having noticed that cranes staying next to Black-headed gulls and Common terns used to peck eggs and tiny chicks of these birds. It is anticipated that high and dense reeds left uncut will not suit cranes to breed and they will abandon the island important for Common terns.
