Practical management on islands of Niedus and Veisiejai Lakes

Project staff continued practical management works on the islands of Niedus and Veisiejai Lakes. Habitat managers removed high vegetation as well as reed stands about the islands. Special works were performed not only on the territory of the terns’ colony as well as in the surrounding area as previously terns were predated by the several pairs of breeding cranes. Cranes became common in Lithuania and unfortunately, they feed on the chicken and eggs while living next to the terns or gulls colonies. It is expected that removal of high vegetation will change cranes preferred breeding habitat and they will move from the island to other sites.
