Unpredictable terns’ journeys
17-07-2020
It has been already written that several dozens of terns were equipped with the GPS transmitters. The main aim of this action – to collect important data about their feeding, roosting and breeding areas. The results allowed to discover two new terns’ colonies, which are situated on the roofs of the industrial buildings in Alytus and Marijampole. We are constantly receiving new information from the GPS transmitters and information surprises the researches.
In was predicted, the birds from the colony of Novaraistis ornithological reserve are using the same area as breeding and feeding territory because other water bodies are situated in a distance, however it’s not a case. Most of the birds fly to Nemunas river to feed, which is situated app. 11 km from the site. Some birds were flying even further – they reached water bodies near Trakai and Vilnius. The journey of some birds involved even visiting neighbouring countries- Belarus, Poland and Ukraine. The GPS data observations will be published in the scientific publication at the end of the project. We expect that further observations will bring more exiting information.
