A successful breeding season in Nemunas delta
27-07-2021
The last terns’ breeding season was not successful in Nemunas delta, as birds started to breed only on one island of the river, which is located in Russia, and unfortunately the nests were destroyed afterwards.
The start of the breeding season in 2021 was also not promising, as due to the high water level most of the islands were under water. However, the breeding conditions soon became suitable, as the water raised down and with a slight delay terns started to breed.
The most popular among the birds were newly formed sand islands near Girininkai village, where 50 nests of Common and 67 nests of Little terns were counted. The project staff also installed protective shelters for the chicks.
