After the terns’ breeding season the protective shelters and warning signs were collected by the LOD staff. The protective shelters significantly decrease the damage made my predators and destructive activities of humans. During the project lifetime 600 protective shelter will be distributed in the project sites, mainly SPA, but as other sites important for breeding terns.

Protective shelters are one of the best measures, mainly addressed to decrease the impact of the predators.
The negative impact of the predators is relevant for the most SPAs, designated for the breeding terns. Significant negative impact of the European Herring Gull and Caspian Gull is observed in three SPA – Kretuonas Lake, Niedus lake island and Novaraistis ornithological reserve. Negative impact of the American mink is registered in two SPAs – Nemunas delta and Niedus ornithological reserve. Corvids and birds of prey are also predating on the terns’ chicks on the sandy bare islands of Nemunas river.
The protective measures will be again installed during the next breeding season.
