The project discussed formation of new islands in the Lowland of Nemunas river

The Project‘s partners from the Lithuanian Ornithological Society and The State Enterprise Inland Waterways Authority organised a joint trip to the Lowland of Nemunas river. Partners visited newly poured parts of the island Galzdonai and evaluated possibilities to establish new islands in Nemunas between Rusne settlement and Curonian lagoon. The planned activities were discussed with local fishermen, as it’s important to consider their opinion. The new islands will be made while deepening waterway in the Nemunas river. The natural islands are heavily overgrown with high vegetation, therefore not suitable anymore for the terns’ breeding. Participants of the meeting discussed possibility to remove the reed stands and woody vegetation from the river islands, as it will allow to attract Common and Little terns to Nemunas delta and coast of the Curonian lagoon.
