CINEA representative visited project‘s sites

27th -28th June 2022, the CINEA representative Ms Maria Jose Aramburu visited Lithuania. Together with the monitoring group expert Ms Viktorija Maceikaite she evaluated the progress achieved so far. She was interested in what challenges are encountered during the implementation of the LIFE projects. With its start in 2018, the LIFE TERNS project is coming to an end - this is also evidenced by the conservation works carried out in the most important breeding places of Common and Little terns throughout Lithuania. During the trip, guest visited Nemunas delta, Blinstrubiškis forest SPA in Raseiniai district as well as Kalviai gravel pit SPA in Klaipėda district. Every breeding season brings new challenges – due to very high water in Nemunas river most of the sandy islands are still under water, however terns successfully breed in fishponds on the artificial rafts or on newly established island in Nemunas. The project partner Inland Waterways Authority, inspired by the successful cooperation within the project and in consultation with the LOD and Vente horn ornithological station staff, on their own initiative established a new gravel island near the Vente horn. This newly established area immediately became popular resting place of birds. Who knows, maybe the next season terns will start breeding on it?
