Terns’ monitoring results from the islands of Nemunas river
22-06-2019
Monitoring of breeding Common and Little Terns was performed already twice at the riverbed section of Nemunas river between Kulautuva and Smalininkai settlements. Results of the monitoring are promising – in this section of Nemunas river, including newly formed sandy islands in the area, 218 pairs of breeding Common Terns and 72 pairs of Little Terns were counted. In addition to the project’s target species, ornithologist also observed 4 pairs of Eurasian Oystercatchers, 13 pairs of Little Ringed Plovers, a few pairs of Northern Lapwings, Black-headed Gulls and single individuals of Common Redshank. Seeking to protect the fledglings, 65 protective shelters and 10 warning signs were installed on the islands, where terns are breeding.
