Floating artificial islands – for improvement of the ecosystems’ status

In the frame of the LIFELagoons project, a seminar „Perspectives of the artificial floating islands in Lithuania” was held in Klaipeda University on October 21st, 2021.

A project ornithologist Julius Morkūnas presented the LIFE TERNS project’s activities and main results. During his presentation “Positive effect of the artificial islands/floating rafts on the population of Common Tern” he highlighted significant achievements of the practical habitat management while increasing breeding population of terns. Presentations were finalized with the interesting discussion on the possible materials for building artificial islands or rafts – natural sources might be used (reeds, coconut fibre, wood etc.). Plans on the islands fix phosphorus and nitrogen from water and creates habitats for various organisms. It was decided to cooperate on development of combined models of the artificial islands that might be used both for open habitats for terns’ and plants communities.
