Major work forming habitats for terns

In 2019 – 2020, the State Enterprise Inland Waterways Authority performed impressive work forming habitats for terns. In the segment of the Nemunas river between Kulautuva and Smalininkai 10 islands and a beach were produced depositing soil. The islands were made cleaning the riverbed, and the sites for them were chosen taking into consideration the water current to avoid washing out. In the Nemunas delta a set of 3 small islands, 3 individual islands and a beach were formed. The work was carried out using powerful dredgers Nemuno 11 and Upyna, also a floating crane PK – 10. Also, ships servicing them and marking the route were used.

Terns having come back from their wintering places will find new habitats suitable to form colonies. Hopefully, it will facilitate to strengthen and significantly increase populations of Common and Little terns encouraging to choose the Nemunas river.
